Hydro Ban Board requires studs to be 16″ on-center. The foam core is waterproof and the fleece on each side is waterproof. Laticrete only requires 1-5/8″ Hydro Ban Board screws for walls, spaced every 12″ along the studs. Hydro Ban Adhesive and Sealant is used to waterproof the seams, screws, and tub/wall transitions.
Schluter’s KERDI-BOARD is a second great way to waterproof bathtub walls. It also needs studs to be 16″ on-center. The foam core is not waterproof but the fleece on each side is. Also, the front fleece has lines that make cutting KERDI-BOARD super easy. Schluter requires their screws and washers be used to install the boards, again spaced every 12″ along the studs. Schluter’s KERDI-BAND and unmodified thin-set (e.g. Kerabond) or ALL is used to waterproof seams and screws. KERDI-FIX and KERDI-BAND are used to waterproof the tub transition.
Wedi board is also fantastic for waterproofing bathtub walls. Like KERDI-BOARD and Hydro Ban Board, it requires studs to be 16″ on-center. The foam core is waterproof and the cementicious layer on each side is waterproof, too. Wedi requires their screws and washers be used either on wood or metal studs, every 12″ along the studs. Only Wedi Joint Sealant should be used to waterproof seams and screws.
