Interior Design — Small Open-Concept Home Renovation

On designer Olivia Botrie of Barbara Purdy Design walks us through the renovation of her parents’ home after they downsized. See how her design blends rustic warmth and a clean, contemporary feel. Modern fireplaces add cosiness, while a herringbone floor and stone wall in the mudroom is contrasted by a sleek white kitchen with concealed appliances.

  7. Wow, she talks really fast. Like trying to race someone and beat someone to the point. There's a spastic tone to her voice. And she can't stop moving her head! She gives me a headache. Sorry!

  17. No, no, no—-where’s the powder room and master bath???? Seriously, I love this house, except I think your mom needs to add a little more Frenchiness! lol My husband and I are exactly as you described your parents’ design style, and we’re moving to a new-to-us home at the end of the year when he retires, so I was really wanting to see how you handled this. I think I’d need a bit more gilt and carving!

  18. I hate it when they refer to a large or medium sized space as small space.

  26. That's really nice.. for the mast bedroom though, I'd prefer that colour on an accent wall and the wardrobe doors rather than the entire room

  41. Wow…the space configuration is beautiful and very efficient use. So much storage on the master bedroom considering the small space. I would reconfigure the office in the back of the home as a playroom for my son.😚

  47. Love long skinny places. In a very different economic class was one of my favorite homes ever….my single wide mobile home. Had a layout that I loved. If I left the phone at one end of the house, it rang and I ran to catch the call I could fantisize that it was a "mansion". My mobile home was laid out super similar to this. Instead of walking into the living the end cap where the front door is was a little hall with the bedrooms and bathroom down it and the door just adjacant to where this front door is. The "mud" room in this house was where my laundry was (not elevated). Was the easiest home to live in, entertain and clean I've every had. If it wasn't for the low quality I would go back to a single wide in a minute.

  49. Why does the decorator look so untidy and without make up? Her beauty and talent would have been noticed if she had had her hair done, lots of make up and elegant and beautiful clothing
